- Lobbyists for Amazon, Walmart and other big businesses are writing a law to collect Florida sales tax online
- In advance of the 2020 session, legislation filed by Sen. Joe Gruters, a Republican from Sarasota County as SB 126 would, if passed, ensure Florida shoppers pay sales tax on most online purchases. Walmart Inc., Target Corp. and Best Buy Inc. – who must already collect sales tax on products sold in their stores – have been leading the campaign to ensure the tax also extends to online orders. Technically, Florida consumers are already supposed to pay the tax when they buy goods online. But the reality is that few people actually do and the law is difficult to enforce. An online sales tax law would require the Internet sellers to collect and pay the tax, just as physical retailers do.
